Tainui Group Holdings Ltd

Vision

We see it as a collective responsibility for all iwi-owned businesses to further Maaori economic development. In 2007 the TGH Board formally adopted the statement "Leading Maaori Economic Development" as a guiding principle. We see this vision as aspirational - a long-term goal to strive for. If we set our sights on achieving it, and others are prompted to match or better it, then all iwi-owned companies will grow. We also see it as a statement of our desire to work co-operatively with other such companies to identify mutually beneficial commercial opportunities.

To date, there has been exceptionally strong interest in the TGH model and achievements from other iwi, and in the potential for business partnerships. Given the brief we have from our shareholder, any arrangements we enter into with others must be on a commercial basis, and there must first be strong and enduring relationships at tribal governance level between the respective parties.

TGH currently has one strategic co-investment agreement, with Ngai Tahu Holdings Group, signed in 2008. Under this agreement, the two companies have agreed to formally consider commercial opportunities that will be beneficial to both. The purchase of our shareholding in Ryman Healthcare came directly from this relationship.

In our view there is immense potential to fully utilise Maaoridom's asset base by pooling resources and expertise, and as with TGH, what benefits Maaoridom will ultimately benefit the whole community.
